MERRY WAR, A | KEEP THE ASPIDISTRA FLYING

An amusing, almost literal transcription of George Orwell's astute and poignant 1936 novel about a young chap who renounces a lucrative career in advertising to become "a free man." The title is Orwell's term for the battle between the sexes, but the film has as much to say about debilitating poverty. Superb performances by Richard E. Grant and Helena Bonham Carter.
