This operatic fairy tale presents a young peasant trying to become a learned man in order to be worthy of the woman he wants to marry. A fairy comes to his aid, and eventually the pair fall in love. The Goddess of Mercy lends her wand so the fairy can shed her alternate form, that of a
1,000-year-old carp, and happily wed the now-wiser peasant. The film's most unusual touch: both the male and female leads are played by women.
