MEPHISTO

The winner of 1981's Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, MEPHISTO is an inspired update of the Faust legend featuring a tour de force performance by Klaus Maria Brandauer. Critically acclaimed stage actor Hendrik Hofgen (Brandauer) tires of the "entertaining" theatrical forms and attempts something more revolutionary, more Brechtian. Despite his ground-breaking ideas, he does not rise to fame--they cannot even spell his name correctly on posters. Desperate, Hendrik sells his soul--not to the Devil, but to the Nazis--his desire for fame more urgent than his hatred of the oppressor. It is only later, after he is indebted to the Third Reich, that he realizes his mistake. Based on a novel by Klaus Mann (son of Thomas) and exquisitely photographed, MEPHISTO bubbles over with the energy of Brandauer's bravura performance, which quickly attracted the attention of Hollywood. Brandauer and director Istvan Szabo would team again to make COLONEL REDL and HANUSSEN. leave a comment
