The Mephisto Waltz

1971, Movie, R, 115 mins

When an aging piano player (Jurgens) grants Alda an interview strange things happen. Jurgens, a practicing satanist, takes over Alda's body to continue living after he dies of leukemia. Bisset, Alda's wife, eventually notices the change (though it takes a bit too long) and also becomes possessed after making a pact with the devil. There are some genuinely chilling scenes, but it is still a made-for-TV-ish ROSEMARY'S BABY rip-off. A creepy score by Goldsmith is nearly as frightening as the subject matter. Jakob Gimpel does a piano rendition of Franz Liszt's "The Mephisto Waltz." leave a comment
