Gable emerged as a good actor--much to the surprise of his MGM bosses--in this film, having earlier played mediocre roles in gangster programmers. Here he is a dedicated, brilliant physician being guided by veteran doctor Hersholt. He meets and falls in love with playgirl Loy, whose only interest is in having a good time. Forget medical science and research and helping humanity, she tells Gable, and take up a society practice where you can make big money. He does, forsaking Hersholt and the girl who loves him, Allan, whom he has impregnated. Allan has an abortion, but develops peritonitis and dies while Gable stands by helplessly.
