1973, Movie, NR, 100 mins

After serving 10 years for bank robbery, Delon is released after intercession on his behalf by his old pal Gabin, a social worker. Delon returns to his wife and respectability, despite attempts by his cohorts to lure him back to his old life. Later, there is a prison riot, and Gabin ends up settling in the same town as Delon. The two families become close, but Delon's wife is killed in an accident. He remarries but faces scandal when he's hounded by a cop. Delon kills the policeman and is later executed in one of filmdom's more graphic portrayals of the death penalty. This is a taut, interesting psychological film that occasionally suffers from preachiness. Delon's performance is very strong and Gabin is equally good in support. This is reminiscent of the old prison pictures from the 1930s and 1940s, given a good updating and strong material. leave a comment
