Young is an accomplished ballerina who reaches great heights thanks to the disciplined hand of her instructor, Veidt. She marries him more out of respect than love, but before long he dies. She then weds shipping tycoon Jagger and leaves with him for Europe, temporarily abandoning her
dancing career. When she decides to resume her career, she and Jagger separate. When she gives birth to a daughter, Jagger takes the child to New York and Young soon follows for a happy reconciliation. This was Ratoff's first independent venture, and it was a handsomely mounted and well-acted
tale. The film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Sound.
