Gable emerged as a good actor--much to the surprise of his MGM bosses--in this film, having earlier played mediocre roles in gangster programmers. Here he is a dedicated, brilliant physician being guided by veteran doctor Hersholt. He meets and falls in love with playgirl Loy, whose only interest is in having a good time. Forget medical science and research and helping humanity, she tells Gable, and take up a society practice where you can make big money. He does, forsaking Hersholt and the girl who loves him, Allan, whom he has impregnated. Allan has an abortion, but develops peritonitis and dies while Gable stands by helplessly. The death affects both Gable and Loy, the latter realizing that Gable should be devoting himself to the elimination of disease rather than living the good life. This theme was to see much usage in many films to come, but here it was fresh and original, and the film proved a big box-office success, establishing Gable as a substantial actor and furthering the long career of Loy. Boleslawski's direction is meticulous and impressive. This was the first of seven films Gable would make with Loy, who later stated that "it seems incredible that we were never lovers." But this was not the case with Gable and the film's other woman. During the production Gable and Allan had a brief affair, which later caused writer Anita Loos to say of him: "Clark had a Babbitt mentality about sex in those days. That old, early American male idea that you must take on any girl that comes your way." leave a comment
