Men Are Not Gods: Review
The title comes from a line in "Othello," but that is about the last time anything literary happens here (except for scenes from that Shakespeare play). Men are not gods and this is not much of a movie. Matter of fact, it gets downright embarrassing at times. The original release was eight minutes longer but met with such indifference that the decision was made to snip a bit. They should have snipped more. Lawrence is the wife of Shaw, a classical actor. She appeals to Hopkins, secretary to theatrical critic Matthews, who has written a scathing review of Shaw's performance in a new production. Lawrence wants Hopkins to alter the review so the play becomes a hit. The amended review is printed and people flock to the theater, but Hopkins is fired. She is rehired when people seem to like the version of "Othello," then other complications ensue. Hopkins meets Shaw and falls for him, and Lawrence, a very jealous woman and Shaw's costar in the play, sees that she must put a stop to this right away. She asks Hopkins to cease and desist and allow their marriage to continue. Shaw is just as nuts about Hopkins as she is about him, so he has other plans for his wife. The two actors are on stage and Hopkins is in the audience when Shaw, as the Moor, begins to choke Lawrence, as Desdemona, but this time it's for real. Hopkins realizes what Shaw is up to and lets out a shriek. Shaw, who may or may not have been thinking about actually killing his wife (perhaps it was the throes of the scene that caused the extra clench around Lawrence's neck?), stops throttling her, and later we learn that Lawrence is pregnant. That news is enough to get Hopkins out of their lives and she exits as Shaw and Lawrence clasp each other. Very hokey and totally unbelievable; it's amazing that someone had the nerve to make this picture and not transform it into a comedy, as the situations are often funnier than those in many mirthful movies. Harrison is wasted (in his sixth screen appearance) and so is our time. They attempted suspense here, but it's as tense as a Perry Como medley.
