An old, hospitalized man (Silva) has a dreamy flashback to his youth in which he gets carried into a surrealistic fantasy involving his girl friend, a man in a white mask whose face Silva falls through, a bearded giant, and a dancing hunchback. Silva is thrown into a stream which makes his beard grow to unheard-of proportions. His forehead is cut while he is alone in a forest, and he pulls out of the wound a three-leaf fern.
