An old, hospitalized man (Silva) has a dreamy flashback to his youth in which he gets carried into a surrealistic fantasy involving his girl friend, a man in a white mask whose face Silva falls through, a bearded giant, and a dancing hunchback. Silva is thrown into a stream which makes his
beard grow to unheard-of proportions. His forehead is cut while he is alone in a forest, and he pulls out of the wound a three-leaf fern. He then finds himself in an artist's studio where his face becomes the abstract portrait that is on the canvas. Maybe it all makes sense, but it's probably not
