Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs, Beloved) finally broke through the ranks of B-movie directors with this pungent real-life fable about the elusiveness of the American Dream. While driving along a lonesome stretch of Nevada highway, milkman Melvin Dumar (Paul LeMat) picks up a grizzled tramp (Jason Robards) who claims to be Howard Hughes. He gives Melvin two bits at the end of the ride, then makes him the beneficiary of $156 million. Mary Steenburgen won an Oscar for her utterly charming portrayal of Melvin's tap-dancing wife.
