Autry is invited to pay a visit to his hometown of Torpedo, Arizona, and is made honorary sheriff for the Frontier Days Celebration. When MacLane and his outlaw gang start raising a ruckus, Autry decides to wear the badge just as long as it takes to rid the town of the gang. Durante is at his best as the announcer of Autry's radio show. Advertised more as a musical than a western, MELODY RANCH (the name of Autry's radio show) was directed by Joseph Santley, who was better known on the sound stage. The film also featured an early role for Ann Miller and radio comedienne Vera Vague (Barbara Jo Allen). Songs, all by Jule Styne and Eddie Cherkose, include, "Melody Ranch," "Call of the Canyon" (sung by Autry), "We Never Dream the Same Dream Twice" (Autry, Miller), "Vote for Autry" (Durante), "My Gal Sal" (Miller), "Torpedo Joe," "What Are Cowboys Made Of?" "Rodeo Rose," "Back in the Saddle Again," and "Go Back to the City Again." leave a comment
