Since his brilliant HIROSHIMA, MON AMOUR, Alain Resnais's experiments with nonlinear structure and the relationship between memory and the past have placed him among the ranks of the greatest directors. In light of these experiments, MELO comes as a shock, a traditionally constructed linear narrative adapted from a 1929 Parisian stage melodrama written by Henry Bernstein.
