Rancher Chuck Rodwell (Dailey) is a roulette addict, but he doesn't become a big winner until he hooks up with Maria Corvier (Charisse), a lovely, leggy ballerina who becomes his good luck charm. Every time he holds her hand the numbers come up for Chuck--not only at the casino but on his ranch, where the chickens lay a record-breaking number of eggs and an oil well gushes. The center of activity is the Sands casino, but Chuck and Maria, who form a 50-50 partnership, saunter through many other glamorous spots in America's foremost gaming gulch before deciding to extend their partnership into the arena of romance. Between spins of the wheel, lots of great tunes and dance numbers are presented. Among the guest stars who pop up in clever scenes are Frank Sinatra, Debbie Reynolds, Vic Damone, and Pier Angeli, and the film also offers a wonderful 10-second shot of Peter Lorre sitting at a blackjack table and snapping to dealer Oscar Karlweis, "Hit me, you creep." Songs by Nicholas Brodszky and Sammy Cahn include: "The Girl with the Yaller Shoes" (sung and danced by Dailey and Charisse), "If You Can Dream" (sung over the credits by the Four Aces, reprised by Lena Horne), "Hell Hath No Fury" (sung by Frankie Laine), "Lucky Charm" (sung by Jerry Colonna), "I Refuse to Rock'n'Roll" (sung by Cara Williams), "Sleeping Beauty Ballet" (danced by Charisse), "Frankie and Johnny" (new lyrics by Sammy Cahn, sung by Sammy Davis, Jr., danced by Charisse). leave a comment
