Meet John Doe: Review

The ending is a little wobbly, but this dark, moralising good-will film from Frank Capra otherwise stands among his best films. Barbara Stanwyck stars as an ambitious journalist who, as a parting shot to the bigwigs that have just fired her, writes a fake letter written by a downtrodden "John Doe." As an act of protest against the powers that be, he threatens to jump off the top of City Hall on Christmas Eve. The public outpouring is enormous, and Stanwyck suggests finding a real John Doe to continue his story and sell more papers. Out-of-work ballplayer Gary Cooper just happens to fit the bill.
