MEET THE HOLLOWHEADS is anything but a sci-fi moviegoer's dream. Instead, special-effects expert Tom Burman, making his directing debut, has delivered the kind of science-fiction film in which the originality of the effects far outstrips the ingenuity of the plot or characters. Henry Hollowhead (John Glover) is a meter reader with United Umbilical, which supplies food and other domestic services through a network of tubes. Ambitious and overdue for a promotion, Henry jumps at a chance to ingratiate himself with his cretinous superior, Mr. Crabneck (Richard Portnow), when the boss finally accepts an invitation to join the Hollowhead family for dinner. Upon his arrival chez Hollowhead, polite chatter quickly gives way to a battle for pride and dignity. Essentially a lunatic sitcom stretched to 90-minute length, MEET THE HOLLOWHEADS lacks comic energy and its characters are strictly cardboard creations. While the production design and special effects are both imaginative and meticulous, the script is hackneyed and the staging awkward. The cast tries hard, but it's a losing battle. From the outset, the humans in HOLLOWHEADS are strictly supporting players for Burman's wizardry with latex and the camera. leave a comment
