A Medal For Benny: Review

Off-beat satire features Naish as the father of "Benny," an offscreen character who was considered a bad kid in the small Southern California fishing town where he lived. Word comes that he has been posthumously awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor for wiping out 100 Japanese soldiers before taking a sniper's bullet himself. Naturally, everyone in the town falls all over each other to praise the local kid. Lamour plays the woman Benny was engaged to, and De Cordova is her new fiance. In order not to destroy the town's illusions, De Cordova joins the Army instead of marrying the girl. Lamour and Naish are standouts in this funny and well-scripted piece. Naish's speech at the end is particularly memorable. Naish, the Irish-American who practically made a career in the movies by portraying Latin types, won an Academy Award nomination for his meaty role. The story by Steinbeck and Wagner also was a nominee. A good little sleeper that says a lot on the nature of heroes and heroism in America. leave a comment
