This fun-filled farce stars Randall as a tax examiner out to investigate farmer Douglas and his wife Merkel. Upon his arrival, he discovers this couple has never paid taxes, nor do they use money. A typical transaction involves a ton of manure traded for some hogs which are swapped for a refrigerator, which in turn is traded in on an organ that ends up being a donation to the church. This confusing system, along with Douglas' conniving ways, causes Randall to quaff one too many. He's then enraptured with the lovely, earthy farm girl Reynolds and decides to help the family. His superior discovers his improprieties and presents Douglas with a bill for $50,000. But Randall comes to the rescue, finding a claim for an ancestor of Douglas that dates to the Civil War. According to his calculations, the government owes Douglas $14,000,000. Douglas agrees to forget the whole thing if the government will forgive his past transgressions as well as future tax bills. The direction maintains a furious screwball pace, and the laughs come easily and often. Reynolds is a delight, nearly stealing the picture. Though Randall is a bit stiff in his straight scenes, his comic turns are terrific, especially his marvelous drunken scene and the resulting hangover. Some nice camera work and a snappy script. leave a comment
