Far from a routine boxing film, MATILDA is a charming family picture that bounces along as happily as the kangaroo (actually a man in a kangaroo suit) that fights for the world championship in it. Despite the objections of animal lover Carlson the title marsupial earns a shot at the
heavyweight championship, and by the end of the big bout in Lake Tahoe everyone is smiling except gangland chief Guardino. The excellent cast includes Mitchum as a sportswriter, Gould as a two-bit promoter, Stander as the champ's nominal manager, and several real-life ring announcers, most notably
Don Dunphy.
