Mata Hari

This neat version of the famous spy's adventures takes a different approach than one might suspect. Rather than play up the romantic end of the spy life, the film presents a portrait of a woman who happens to be a spy, depicted well by Moreau. The script is cowritten by Truffaut, whose own work often reflects the fascination with the characters of his leading women. The story follows Moreau as she carries on her activities during WW I. Ordered by her German superiors to seduce the French captain Trintignant, she does so, stealing needed papers but inadvertently falling in love with her victim.
