In an unlikely role, Bronson plays a peaceful government agent of the late 19th century. He takes his daughter Webster, her fiance Frankham, and munitions expert Hull on a balloon voyage over a mysterious Pennsylvania crater. It has been the cause of several strange eruptions, and Bronson's job is to find out what's been happening. They are shot down and discover that the crater is the secret headquarters of Price. He is a scientist putting the finishing touches on "the Albatross," an enormous flying ship. He intends to use the craft to fly around the world and destroy all instruments of destruction, eliminating war from the face of the Earth. Taking his prisoners along, Price proceeds in a frenzied glee, destroying not only the munitions but innocent people as well. Bronson decides to destroy the ship, even at the risk of the hostages' lives. But an emergency repair landing on a Mediterranean island affords a chance of escape, and Bronson destroys the Albatross along with the evil Price and his crew. This was one of AIP's more expensive outings. Despite some good special effects, the film is surprisingly bland. Though Bronson is better in this than most of his other films, he still has a hard time expressing more than three or four emotions. Price is a complete disappointment, giving a restrained performance where a more outrageous parody would have been in order. The film does employ stock footage of man's early attempts at powered flight and the effect is both comical and intelligent. leave a comment
