When word comes over the airwaves of nuclear war in the Middle East, three families leave their homes in the city and head out to the survivalist outpost they have stocked with provisions for just such an event. Their children, following in a van, have engine trouble, and there is some
concern as to whether they'll make it. Lee Briscoe (Peter Donat), the nominal leader and most gung-ho of the novice survivalists, starts on the inevitable power-mad slide into paranoia and lunacy, and the film simultaneously begins on its own slide into cliche-ridden tedium.
