Masquerade

With the advent of talkies, the studios became fascinated with the new medium and began cranking out film after film that was visually simplistic and had nonstop chatter. Often the dialog was so overwhelming that it drained all life from the story. This is such a picture, a yarn about some crooks being chased by a bumbling detective (Cook). Adding to the confusion is the fact that Birmingham, while playing two roles, pretends he is the other character, confusing the heroine, who is trying to locate some papers which she hopes will clear her father of a criminal charge that has landed him in jail. While such a story would probably have been a great comic two-reeler, the added length and long speeches don't add up to much of anything here. leave a comment
