Archeologist Lavut pays a visit to psychiatrist Stevens and explains that he's found a ceremonial mask inhabited by evil spirits that force the wearer to commit murder. Stevens laughs off his guest, who leaves and commits suicide. Shortly thereafter, Stevens receives the mask in his mail, and then the fun really begins. This not-so-scary horror film has one great gimmick going for it. After Stevens dons his mask, viewers are told to "Put the mask on--now." An obedient audience member would then put on a pair of 3-D glasses and watch special "Depth Dimension 3-D" sequences in which the unspeakable acts occur. Among the hallucinations are assorted ghouls sacrificing a beautiful woman on an altar, and another creature rowing a coffinlike boat through a sea of mist. After Stevens attempts to attack his fiancee, the mask is finally restored to its rightful place in a museum, only to attract the attention of another museum visitor. Is this the end? We can only hope so. Despite the unique audience participation gimmick, this is a fairly uninspired horror film. The plot is full of gaping holes that simply can't be covered, and a lot of loose ends are never explained at the climax. There's lots of gore in the 3-D sequences, but there's no suspenseful buildup. Despite its poor box office returns, this somehow gets re-released periodically. leave a comment
