MASK OF ZORRO, THE
starstarstarstar
En garde! The legendary masked hero rides again in this well-acted and superbly directed action-adventure gem. Its pleasures are so old-fashioned, it could have come to us direct from 1955. The year is 1821, and the people of Alta California are caught in the war between Mexican revolutionary Santa Ana and the forces of Spanish oppression. Their one hope: the masked avenger known only as Zorro. With Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins. This 1998 romp swashes its buckles straight — OK, with just the slightest hint of a knowing smile — and goes down as smoothly as a vintage cocktail. Alta California, 1821: Once a coarse, self-interested bandit, now the honorable protege of ruined aristocrat Don Diego (Anthony Hopkins), dashing masked avenger Zorro (Antonio Banderas) defends the interests of the poor, the oppressed and - of course -- the lovely ladies who swoon when he flashes his sword. Sure, it's old-fashioned. But it's also good, clean retro fun, right down to fiery beauty Catherine Zeta-Jones' bullwhip striptease. Read the complete review for The Mask Of Zorro

In 1820, the Mexican Army is on the verge of liberating its country from Spanish colonial rule. In the area of present-day California, the cruel and ruthless Spanish Governor Don Rafael Montero (Wilson) is about to be overthrown by the advancing Mexican Army. In a last ditch effort to trap his arch-nemesis, the masked swordsman Zorro, Montero lays a trap by condemning three innocent men to death. The trap is thwarted with assistance from the local peasant population, who see Zorro as their champion. Particularly helpful were two orphan brothers, Joaquin and Alejandro Murrieta. Zorro then lands in front of Montero and cuts a "Z" into his neck as a reminder to never return to California.
