After her husband is killed during a fox hunt, Bainter sends her son off to school in Europe and sells the family stables. When son Payne returns, he meets Brennan, his father's former trainer, and falls in love with his two horses as well as Brennan's daughter Joyce. After entering and winning the Maryland Hunt, Payne succeeds in melting his mother's prejudices and phobias towards horses. Though a formula plot, the film is lushly photographed in Technicolor and tells some factual information about Maryland's history. The acting is fine, despite the weaknesses in the script. Carter plays a comic black stable groom in a rousing revival meeting that is one of the film's highlights. Though this was considered entertaining and insightful in its time, today the scene reflects the racism of Hollywood during the 1930s and 40s. leave a comment
