Mary Lou

1948, Movie, NR, 65 mins

starstarstarstar
Light post-WW II entertainment features Barton as an airline hostess who wants to be a singer for a band. Problems arise when she and another singer argue over which of them has the rights to the moniker "Mary Lou." Through the usual movie cliches Barton comes out on top. This is simplistic, though aptly acted and directed. Like many features of the day, it was merely a showcase for some big band numbers and musical set pieces. Songs include: "Mary Lou" (J.R. Robinson, Abe Lyman, George Waggner), "Don't Mind My Troubles," "I'm Sorry I Didn't Say I'm Sorry" (Allan Roberts, Lester Lee), "That's Good Enough for Me," "Wasn't It Swell Last Night?" (Roberts, Doris Fisher), "Carle's Boogie" (Frankie Carle), "Learning to Speak English" (Facundo Rivero, Ben Blossner). leave a comment
