The Martyr: Review

Genn is a doctor in the Warsaw ghetto who takes care of children orphaned by the war and manages to keep a children's hospital running inside the ghetto. When the Nazis clear out the area, he opts to remain with the children he loves and is sent to a concentration camp. Though Genn is a bit overdramatic, the children are completely natural throughout. The scenes of ghetto life are painfully realistic and nicely handled. The political implications behind this film are just as interesting as the final product. Director Ford was once a big name in Polish filmmaking but left for Israel after anti-Semitic reaction of the Polish government to the 1967 Seven Days War between Israel and Egypt. More importantly, this Holocaust-themed story (based on a true account) was the first co-production of West Germany and Israel, signifying a sort of artistic reconciliation between Jews and Germans for the atrocities of WW II. leave a comment
