Gleefully lewd, rude and downright vulgar, this animated film is neither for children nor for adults who shrink from cartoon images of graphic sex and bloody violence. Average guy Grant, recently married to the lovely Kerry, gets zapped by an errant beam from his satellite dish. Next thing he knows, there's a weird pulsating growth on his neck and his every fleeting thought -- sexual, grotesque, surreal, savage or any combination thereof -- becomes real. Havoc is wrought. Kerry undergoes a series of freaky transformations while she and Grant have sex. Her fastidious mother finds herself covered with bugs during an uncomfortable family dinner. A lawn-mowing neighbor is suddenly pursued by a gigantic, vengeful blade of grass. He escapes and immediately calls the "Jackie Jason Show," which quickly books Grant as a guest. This in turn brings him to the attention of evil Smile Corps (think Disney) mogul Larson Giles, who wants to harness Grant's gift in the name of junk entertainment. Fans of cartoonist-turned-animator Bill Plympton won't want to miss this warped, feature-length moral tale punctuated with sprightly little ditties that aren't quite as witty as they're meant to be (though a lyric like "would you love me/if I followed a fad/dressed like a shad/blew your dad" has a certain je ne sais quoi). But less devoted viewers should be warned that Plympton does his best work in shorts: At feature length, his signature obsessions -- bizarre metamorphoses, lethal bosoms, distasteful bodily functions and anatomical impossibilities chief among them -- become repetitive and a little tiresome. The recurring image of a TV tucked in the corner, the Smile Corps mascot dancing and singing in a tinny voice, "I'm so happy/I'm so happy/I'm so happy you're so happy" is desolate, haunting, and hits the brain-rotting pap right on the head. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
