MARLOWE | LITTLE SISTER

Garner is a Los Angeles private detective hired by Farrell to find her missing brother. He traces the missing man to a hotel, where he tries to get information from both the manager and the current occupant of the brother's old room. The men deny knowing anything about the brother, but both are murdered with ice picks shortly thereafter. A lead produces photographs of noted television star Hunnicutt in compromising clinches with gangster Wynant. Wynant sends henchman Lee to Garner's office to warn him off the case, and detective O'Connor harasses the private eye, suspecting him in the hotel manager's murder. Garner eventually tracks Farrell's brother, Newman, to doctor Stevens' place, where Newman is dying of an ice-pick wound. Garner next heads for Wynant's house, where he finds the gangster dead--with Hunnicutt beside the body, volunteering a confession. Garner tampers with the evidence to make it suggest suicide and learns that Hunnicutt and Farrell are sisters. He further learns that Moreno, a stripper friend of Hunnicutt's, was Wynant's former lover. Garner accuses Moreno of killing the gangster, but just as he does, Moreno's ex-husband (Stevens) shows up, shoots her, and then turns the gun on himself. Transporting Raymond Chandler's detective hero of the 1940s into the 1960s fails mostly because of Garner's portrayal. He's too relaxed and lacks the cynicism of Marlowe's original character--which Humphrey Bogart and Alan Ladd both successfully conveyed. Other original elements are more in evidence: the tangled plot with loose ends that are never quite neatly resolved and the strange secondary characters with odd names. The movie is most memorable for a scene in which Lee, in his first American screen appearance, destroys Garner's office while the helpless detective can only sit and watch. leave a comment
