This poignant story has Whitman, the child of a domineering but pampering mother and an ineffectual father, growing into manhood confused about his manliness. An unhappy affair leaves him only more bewildered, and he becomes more and more attracted to young girls, whom he does not feel threatened by. This leads to his being convicted of abducting a 10-year-old girl with the intention of molesting her. Whitman is sentenced to three years in prison under the care of psychiatrist Steiger. After learning to understand and cope with his situation, Whitman is released ready to start anew. He manages to find a decent job and becomes engaged to Schell, a widow with a 10-year-old girl. When a nosy reporter spots Whitman after a child has been molested, Whitman's past is brought out into the open, ruining his marriage plans as well as the career he has been pursuing. Oscar-nominated Whitman is convincing in his role, with added flavor by Steiger as the eccentric psychiatrist. There is a nice warm feeling between Whitman, Schell, and Black in the family scenes. The script lapses into unbelievable situations at times, such as the reporter's inquisitiveness, but overall it flows well. The flashbacks used to explain Whitman's problems growing up are overly intrusive. leave a comment
