Mark Of The Renegade

1951, Movie, NR, 81 mins

Escapist entertainment set in colonial California features Montalban as an undercover agent for the Republic of Mexico who is out to spoil a plot by Roland to create a separate Republic of California. Montalban disguises himself as one of a gang of pirates, led by Tobias, out to sack Los Angeles for Roland's cause. This is just a ploy to enable Montalban to get the information he needs. While disguised as a pirate, he is forced to wed Roland's daughter, Charisse. Postcard-like photography and lavish costuming and sets are a plus in this adventure, which lacks story development but has plenty of well-paced action to make up for it. Performances are good.
