Murray plays Norman Vincent Peale in this film based on Arthur Gordon's book about the inspirational leader. The son of a cruel Ohio clergyman, Murray works as a crime reporter before turning to the cloth himself in the hope of combating the misfortune he has been reporting. Because of his rather-unorthodox beliefs--that God is a loving God, rather than a vengeful one--he is regarded as a rebel. He becomes a popular figure, attracting a large following, as well as appearing on the radio and in his own syndicated newspaper column. He eventually publishes a book, The Power of Positive Thinking, and considers resigning from the church. His faith is renewed, however, after a critically ill child is brought back to health. Murray is appropriately devout, charismatic, and loquacious as the appealing-appalling minister. Windom turns in a fine performance, as does Hyland, who was "introduced" to the moviegoing public in this picture. leave a comment
