Barrymore plays a small-town doctor whose search for success and prominence within his field is continually thwarted because of his devotion to the people he serves. He is a self-sacrificing sort who will accept vegetables or a chicken as payment for his services. Barrymore finally gets recognition for his career when a large medical society honors him.
