Maniac Cop

MANIAC COP is something of a disappointment from Larry Cohen, the one-man movie machine who has written, produced, and directed such modern genre classics as the "It's Alive" trilogy and Q. Serving only as producer and writer here, Cohen turned over the directing chores to Bill Lustig, whose MANIAC (1980) is one of the most repulsive splatter movies ever made. Written with tongue firmly in cheek, the film begins as New York City is terrorized by a homicidal killer in a police uniform whom the press dubs "Maniac Cop." Although the police department officially denies the killer is from their ranks, homicide detective McRae (Tom Atkins) isn't so sure, and his investigation soon implicates young policeman Jack Forrest (Bruce Campbell) in the killings. This is a one-idea concept enlivened ever so slightly by fleeting moments of Cohen's patented sociopolitical subtext and goofy black humor. Richard Roundtree (who appears in Q), Sheree North, and William Smith--all veteran genre film actors with familiar faces--lend credibility to the absurd proceedings. Also appearing in brief cameos are Jake "Raging Bull" LaMotta as a detective and director Sam Raimi (EVIL DEAD) as a reporter. leave a comment
