The protagonist (John Ethan Wayne, the Duke's son) buys a couple of horses at a racetrack, a purchase that leads to unforeseen troubles. His attempt to water the horses on land owned by Ben Robeson (Ernest Borgnine), a malevolent rancher, proves a terrible mistake. With sneer in place, Robeson insists the horses are his and kicks the stranger off his land. When the wronged man returns to collect his animals, Robeson has him arrested and tossed in the clink.
