People may argue about the relative merits of Annie Hall, but this is a better, more realized film. By this time Woody Allen had forsworn the glib one-liners in favor of developing rich, round characters, and it makes many of his earlier films seem shallow by comparison. Allen stars as a successful TV writer with higher aspirations and a girlfriend (Mariel Hemingway) young enough to be his daughter. Adulthood beckons when he meets Diane Keaton, a pseudo-intellectual who first bothers, then bewitches, Allen. Meryl Streep costars. Read the complete review for Manhattan
