A classic example of the in-name-only sequel: This formulaic stalk-and-kill picture has absolutely nothing to do with THE MANGLER (1995), a pretty lame excuse for a film that nonetheless bears some small resemblance to the short story by Stephen King. Here, students of the tony Royal Collegiate College return from vacation to find their school has been given a state-of-the-art security system by the billionaire alumnus Mr. Newton (Ken Canroux), whose daughter, Jo (Chelse Swain), is a student. After assembly, stern Headmaster Bradeen (Lance Henrikson) sends virtually the entire school on a field trip, leaving only a handful of faculty and five student house prefects — Jo, rich boy Corey (Miles Meadows), hottie Emily (Daniella Evangelista), level-headed Dan (Will Sanderson) and token black guy Will (Dexter Bell) — on the oh-so-secure premises. Bradeen has kept them behind because he wants to know who hacked into the school's website, and if they don't find and give up the prankster, he promises there will be hell to pay. Of course there's hell to pay anyway, since the bored and malicious Jo, who happens to be an uber-hacker, downloads a computer virus called "The Mangler" into the school's network, hoping that it will fry her dad's fancy-schmancy security system. Instead, it imbues the system with murderous life, and it starts picking off the warm bodies, starting with janitor Bob (Jeff Doucette). No one can get out — the school's perimeter is secured with electrified fences — but anyone who stays is sure to be mangled. What's a nubile victim-to-be to do? Mostly they run and scream, occasionally pausing long enough to be caught by a slow-moving special effect. Horror fans be warned: Not scary. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
