1987, Movie, R, 93 mins

The picture begins in a hospital as Creasy (Scott Glenn), apparently dead, is being zipped into a body bag. From there the entire film is flashback. We learn that Creasy, a burned-out CIA operative, took a job in northern Italy as bodyguard for a wealthy industrialist who was worried that terrorists would kidnap his 12-year-old daughter, Samantha (Jade Malle). Creasy began to come out of his self-imposed emotional prison as he and Samantha established a close relationship. Although the movie begins promisingly enough and maintains interest with the developing relationship between Glenn and Malle, MAN ON FIRE collapses in its last half as the bullets begin to spray and confusion reigns. The dependable Glenn tries hard to squeeze something viable from his underwritten role and succeeds at times. The real standout is young Malle, who adds some zest to a film that everyone feels they've seen before. leave a comment
