MAN WITH A PLAN
starstarstarstar
Whimsical mockumentary that pokes gentle fun at the election process. Uneducated, 73-year-old Vermont dairy farmer Fred Tuttle (Fred Tuttle, in real life a retired dairy farmer) decides to run for Congress. Not because he's a font of grass-roots political idealism, mind you: He needs a job and figures he's no less qualified than any one else to be a congressman. His loopy, no-frills campaign ("Fred -- Why Not?") gradually gains momentum until he's a real threat to incumbent Bill Blachy (Bill Blachy, a former state legislator). The likelihood that this mild-mannered satire -- written, produced, directed, edited and partly shot by Vermonter John O'Brien -- will make you smile depends entirely on how amusing you find the shriveled Mr. Tuttle, whose Yankee accent makes his own name sound like "Furry Turtle." leave a comment
