Brent is a lawyer who, with the help of some hard cash, is talked into defending gangster Barthelmess. He takes the job because he is practically penniless since he gave up prosecution after he sent an innocent kid to the chair, and uses the money to send his younger brother through law school. But Lundigan, the brother, is an idealist and angrily doublecrosses Brent, whom he sees as crooked for defending gangsters, by turning in evidence to the FBI which convicts Brent. Shocked at what he sees as his brother's betrayal, Brent frames Lundigan on a murder charge. But blood is thicker than cash, so he then proceeds to save his younger sibling from the chair by getting the real killer to confess. This film was a remake of THE MOUTHPIECE, which was again remade as the Edward G. Robinson vehicle, ILLEGAL. leave a comment
