Brent is a lawyer who, with the help of some hard cash, is talked into defending gangster Barthelmess. He takes the job because he is practically penniless since he gave up prosecution after he sent an innocent kid to the chair, and uses the money to send his younger brother through law school. But Lundigan, the brother, is an idealist and angrily doublecrosses Brent, whom he sees as crooked for defending gangsters, by turning in evidence to the FBI which convicts Brent.
