A shabby documentary narrated by Orson Welles, about the life and predictions of 16th-century French psychic Michel de Nostredame (1503-1566), better known as Nostradamus. Despite its veneer of seriousness, this In Search Of...-style film is a hodge-podge of archival footage of personalities and events supposedly predicted in Nostradamus's cyptic, highly open-to-interpretation quatrains, along with recreations of scenes from the seer's turbulent life. In addition to claiming that Nostradamus accurately predicted the French and American Revolutions, the American Civil War and even WWII, this film theorizes that he may also have forseen WWIII, the rise of the Antichrist and the imminent apocalypse, speculation that's somewhat udnermined by the fact that 20 years later, the world is still here. Welles maintains a skeptical tone throughout, and the viewers would do well to remember his central role in the War of the Worlds prank. leave a comment
