Smirnov, appearing in his first film after a successful stage career, plays composer Mikhail Glinka in this colorful biography. The composer's operas "Ivan Susanin" and "Russlan and Ludmilla" are prominently featured in the film, and excerpts from both are performed. The Bolshoi Opera
chorus and orchestra also perform a rendition of "Glory to Thee." A sprinkling of Soviet propaganda weighs the picture down in parts, but otherwise it is enjoyable and entertaining. Excellent photography by the near-legendary Edouard Tisse. (In Russian; English subtitles.)
