In this new twist on an Old West story, Reynolds plays a man on the run after murdering his wife's killer and rapist and committing a robbery with outlaw pals Warden and Hopkins. Miles is fleeing her abusive husband, Hamilton. She's attracted to Reynolds' strength, his quiet, reflective manner, and his devotion to the memory of his Indian wife, Cat Dancing. She spends a good part of the movie being dragged, beaten, and almost raped by Warden and Hopkins, but slowly she and Reynolds fall in love, and she travels across country with him to the Indian village where his son lives. Cobb plays the bounty hunter after Reynolds, who is joined in the search by Hamilton. This was Reynolds' first big role, based on the first novel of an Indiana housewife, and it won him the recognition he had spent years in bit parts trying to achieve. It was a box office hit and opened the door to his successful career. He went on to make several other films with Hopkins, including a movie with a similar plot, SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT. leave a comment
