A MAN IN LOVE is romantic melodrama on a grand, international scale. Set mostly in Italy's Cinecitta film studio, it stars Peter Coyote as Steve Elliott, a temperamental American actor playing the lead in a film biography of Cesare Pavese, the Italian Communist writer who committed suicide in 1950 at age 41. The film's stereotypically obsessive director (Jean Pigozzi) has cast a relatively unknown English-speaking actress, Jane Steiner (Greta Scacchi), in a minor role as one of the many women Pavese loved, and her first visit to the set results in an explosive confrontation with the difficult star, offering a hint of things to come. An unpredictable, sexually charged romance develops between the two actors both on-and offscreen, putting Steve's acting ability and his feelings for his wife (Jamie Lee Curtis) to the test. Diane Kurys's first film in English transcends borders. Displaying remarkable adroitness, she interweaves various languages and locales, shows her characters to be a unique group of people involved in a fiction-making process that overlaps with and confuses real life, and maintains a complex plot in which the simple act of choosing a supporting actress nearly sinks the film-within-the-film and upsets two relationships. Badly underrated by critics, especially in comparison with Kurys's ENTRE NOUS, A MAN IN LOVE firmly establishes that Kurys is one of the most compelling filmmakers to emerge from France in recent years. leave a comment
