Andrzej Wajda's sequel to MAN OF MARBLE uses the same scriptwriter and leading players and again traces its story through interviews. This film is a realistic portrayal of Gdansk from the student reform movement of 1968 to the Solidarity strikes in 1980. Strike leader Tomczyk (Jerzy Radziwilowicz) is harassed by the government and by a journalist (Marian Opania). The latter conducts a smear campaign against the young labor activist, but his own loyalties are tested during the strike. Wajda's superb amalgam of fictional characters and historical fact not only entertains but also documents a tense period in Polish history. Solidarity leader Walesa is among the real-life figures who appear. Made under intense political pressure shortly before an authoritarian crackdown, MAN OF IRON was finished only hours before its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won top honors. leave a comment
