Orson Welles is cast in his only western as a powerful rancher who runs his Texas Xanadu with an iron fist. When one of Welles' Mexican laborers is brutally beaten to death, sheriff Chandler starts applying pressure. He gets no support from the townsfolk, however, who fear that Welles
will leave town and take his wealth with him. Chandler goes too far and ends up tied to the back of a pickup truck and dragged through town by a couple of Welles' henchmen. The finale has ranch foreman Larch emerging as the murderer, ending the inquiries into Welles' affairs. An average western
elevated solely by Welles' excellent performance as a sort of western Kane.
