Palance is perfectly cast in the Jack-the-Ripper role of Slade, a psychotic pathologist who boards in a house in London. It is there that he falls in love with the proprietor's daughter, Smith, who rejects him. There's a long list of femmes who've previously spurned Palance, and they've all ended up on the wrong end of the knife. Smith comes close to experiencing the same fate, but Scotland Yard inspector Palmer comes to the rescue. He gives Palance a good chase, which ends as the Ripper takes a suicide leap into the Thames. A well-done but inferior remake of THE LODGER (1944). leave a comment
