1939, Movie, NR, 64 mins

Dr. Henryk Savaard (Boris Karloff), a scientist who experiments with bringing the dead back to life through the use of an artificial heart, is hanged for the murder of one of his patients. Before long, his assistant, Lang (Byron Foulger), uses the doctor's own method to revive him, but the once-noble Savaard is now a changed man bent on revenge. Trapping in his house the judge, jury, and witnesses that convicted him, Savaard kills them off one by one. This picture is the first of three similar films Karloff made under the direction of Nick Grinde--the others being THE MAN WITH NINE LIVES and BEFORE I HANG. Although the story seems far-fetched, it is based on the real-life experiments of Dr. Robert Cornish, who, during the 1930s, was reviving dead dogs but was denied his request to do tests on executed prisoners. leave a comment
